Inside Lucky Orange: Dan Rohr

Lucky Orange has come a long way since its early days, and in our latest edition of “Inside Lucky Orange,” we look at the man who is helping drive the next generation of changes and updates – Dan Rohr.

If you’ve been with Lucky Orange since its inception, you already know we’ve gone through plenty of changes. We’ve added new features and enhanced others, and we aren’t ready to stop yet!

We’ve listened to our customers and brought Dan in to help innovate the experience and turn ideas into reality. It’s a big job, but he’s up to the task.

I was able to sit down with Dan recently and put him in the hot seat of our “Inside Lucky Orange” feature to ask him six questions in 60 seconds (or less):

Angi Bowman (AB): It’s been almost a year since you started working here! What’s your favorite part of working here at Lucky Orange?
Dan Rohr (DR): The leadership. Our Co-founders Danny Wajcman (chief operating officer) & Brian Gruber (chief technology officer) have made a real effort to create a supportive and relaxed culture where the employees enjoy their time in the office. Just as a toxic environment leads to poor results, the positive atmosphere at Lucky Orange breeds collaboration, pushes innovation and allows the team to discover each others strengths.

AB: Being a product designer can be a tedious and complex job. What is the No. 1 challenge you face in your job, and how do you meet that challenge?
DR: The No. 1 challenge I have is making the complex, simple. The strategy is to keep asking questions, avoid assumptions and get to the root of the problem. It’s an ever-evolving challenge, but that’s what makes it fun.

AB: As you know, you can’t be employed at Lucky Orange if you don’t like to eat. We eat some pretty bizarre things here in the office, but now I’m curious – what’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever eaten?
DR: The wife and I took a cooking class in Mexico and one of the ingredients was a big bowl of plump crickets. I hadn’t tried any insects before that, but they did add a nice crunch to the salsa!

AB: Crickets sound…interesting. That makes me also wonder what is something you’ve never done but would like to try?
DR: I’d like to do one of those guided excursions where you get dropped off in the wilderness for a week with no supplies.

AB: Whoa! Maybe you’ll be the next be the next “Survivorman!” Let’s talk about something less adventurous but just as exciting – roasting coffee beans! How did you get into roasting your own beans?
DR: Around six years ago while living in Portland, I discovered black coffee could actually taste good when done right. Everyone seemed to be brewing beer at home, so I decided to try something different.

AB: Let’s wrap this up with something close to home. What is your favorite family tradition?
Over the holidays my wife’s family gets together and spends an entire day baking a variety of cookies. In the evening we’ll watch Elf while eating lots and lots of delicious cookies.
